Next Level Chicken Wings

My Next Level Chicken Wings are just that…next level. Flavor beyond this mortal plane.

These wings have become a favorite of my fiancé’s. If I send him a text letting him know that next level chicken wings are on the menu for dinner, he texts back that I’ve just made his day and he couldn’t be any happier.

As a matter of fact, he’s the one that named this recipe. The first time I made them, he kept pausing between each wing to sing the praises of how incredible they were. “I just…wow. They’re next level. Next level wings.”

I told him I thought that was a pretty solid name for a recipe, and bestowed him with the power to name all the different chicken wing recipes I come up with. So things might get a little weird around here, but bear with me.

Chicken wings have become a staple for dinner in our apartment. First of all, they’re incredibly cheap. I can buy enough high quality chicken wings to feed both of us for 2 meals for about $7. Beyond that, chicken wings are incredibly versatile (have you stepped into a wing restaurant?) and I can put dinner on the table in about 30 minutes.

When I first made these wings, I had fallen headfirst into an obsession with turmeric. Why? Turmeric is basically a superfood. I know, I know, crappy buzzword. But for real. Turmeric is the anti-inflammatory king. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a super potent antioxidant known to be a mental booster. Turmeric also supports cardiovascular health, joint health, digestive health and mood. That’s a lot of benefit for a humble spice.

So I was experimenting with a spice blend that would pack a big turmeric punch but not feature that bitter turmeric taste. I did taste the blend before rubbing it on all the chicken wings, but I’ll admit I wasn’t entirely confident my betrothed would approve of the spicy and smokey flavor. Fortunately, it was love at first bite.

These chicken wings are dry-rubbed – no sauce – so all the flavor comes from a simple little spice blend. Next level chicken wings pack in quite a bit of heat, so they’d be great served with a paleo ranch or another cool dipping sauce. When my fiancé and I eat them, though, we just go all-in. No dipping sauce required. I mean, who has time to stop and dip? I’ll definitely have to try it someday though, because even now a giant bowl of ranch with these sounds like an excellent idea.
