Mache Salad with Beets, Pecans, and Goat Cheese

Mâche Salad with Beets, Pecans, and Goat Cheese

The mâche story

Much like my adventures with kohlrabi, mâche showed up in the early weeks of my CSA share.

It was right about the time I felt like I was going to be drowning in salads for the duration of the CSA…there was absolutely no light at the end of the tunnel – I was destined to eat just salad for weeks and the burden of that might just do me in. You see, there was just so much lettuce at first! As a meat and potatoes kind of girl, I didn’t think I would survive so many boring-ass salads.

Mâche saved my salad-heavy meal rut. Luckily, I also realized that salads could be a lot more creative than just lettuce and dressing. But seriously, mâche is awesome.

Let’s learn a little more about mâche, shall we?

Overcoming Paleo Perfectionism

Overcoming Paleo Perfectionism [A Guest Post]

Hey everyone! My internet friend Jess offered to write a guest post for my blog – how awesome is that?! She recently revamped her blog, focusing now on self love and overcoming diet perfectionism. Both are extremely important topics that I have been itching to write about, but Jess beat me to it and I’d love for her to take the stage. Be sure to visit Jessica’s website for more insights!

———————————–

My name is Jessica and I am a recovering paleo perfectionist. I recently shared my story on my site, Seek Your Journey, and I want to share some tips with you if you find yourself similarly struggling.

Paleo perfectionism is a tough topic to tackle sometimes because it is so rooted in “health”, and there’s a fine line between “health” and obsession and fear these days. I’ll admit, I was terrified of eating certain foods because of the potential health consequences that I’d read so much about in all my paleo books.

But you see, the real root cause of my paleo perfectionism wasn’t due to seeking optimal health. I don’t have celiac disease or any real food sensitivities that manifest immediately, therefore I really didn’t need to be so scared. I’m 21 years old and have always been in pretty good health. The real root of paleo perfectionism is fear. Well, fear and other deep-seated emotional issues.

Kohlrabi, Carrot, and Jalapeno Fritters

Kohlrabi, Carrot, and Jalapeño Fritters

Ever heard of kohlrabi?

It’s an annual vegetable that you may see at your local farmer’s market or receive in your CSA.

It looks weird. Really weird. Which is why I’d never tried it until I involuntarily received it in my weekly CSA share.

Kohlrabi is weird. But also awesome.

*Sigh* I knew this day was coming. Actually, that’s one of the reasons I signed up for a CSA – to try new things. And I have a food blog, so I must like experimenting in the kitchen to some extent. Prepared with a recipe idea and positive thinking, I ended up with these tasty Kohlrabi, Carrot, & Jalapeño Fritters. Success!

Honey-Sweetened Basil Lemonade

Summer is the season of lemonade. And basil. And basil lemonade!

I have to admit, I didn’t really get why people love lemonade in the summer until this year. It’s just never been my thing. But last year, my mom gave me a huge stack of old cooking magazines, and when leafing through them for recipe inspiration I saw a recipe for basil lemonade. How amazing does that sound? Basically, you take two amazing components of a foodie’s summer and smash them together into a refreshing and delicious beverage. And who doesn’t like smashing things?

I made this recipe for my (somewhat) recent cooking demo at Natural Grocers in Fargo, and I’ve finally honed the recipe and photographed it. Hooray!

Crockpot Pulled Pork Banner

Dry-Rubbed Crockpot Pulled Pork

I’ve been meaning to post a crockpot pulled pork recipe for a long time. I probably could have posted one waaaaaay back when I first started this blog…but the problem is, I tend to make up my dry-rub mix on the fly and never write it down.

Even when I did write it down, I didn’t know how to take a pretty picture of pulled pork. Not with my phone camera, anyway.

Well, things change. Now, I have a DSLR. And even though pulled pork wasn’t on my “recipe ideas” list…

I made pulled pork for a big housewarming taco party (along with 2 other kinds of meat), I wrote down the recipe as I made it, and I got rave reviews and compliments on the pork. My partner’s dad has asked me to make it again every time I’ve seen him since.
