Every autumn, I fall head-over-heels for foods and flavors that stereotypically fit the season – squash, sage, clove, chai. So even before tasting this creamy banana chai smoothie, I knew I would love it simply because it showcases one of my favorite spice blends.

I can’t take full credit for this recipe. I typically don’t follow recipes for smoothies; instead, I throw a banana and whatever I can scrounge up from the fridge in a blender and if it tastes decent, I consider it a success. One recent evening, my brilliant best friend, Madi, texted the recipe for a chai banana smoothie that she came up with. Everything was already in my pantry, so I set out to make it the next day…before I knew it, I was telling my genius girlfriend how amazing she is and begged her to let me share the recipe on my blog. Grain-Free Pumpkin Walnut Porridge

Sometimes comfort trumps convenience and habit. I have a handful of other recipes I planned on sharing before this grain-free pumpkin walnut porridge, but this recipe just seemed to fit the theme of the past few weeks much better so I bumped it up in the queue.

Typical porridge isn’t a paleo food – traditional recipes use grains as the base. Of course, though, the paleo world has come up with a way around that so those of us who avoid grains can still enjoy a comforting, warm bowl of porridge for breakfast. And many of them, like this version, is still pretty dang nutritious – always a bonus.

It’s Autumn! And National Coffee Day!

At first, I thought I would be a little sad about the end of summer…but to be honest, I’m pretty thrilled. In a single metaphoric gust of Fargo wind, I remembered all of the wonderful things I love about fall.

The crisp, cool air – not too hot, not too cold. Evening snuggles under a big quilt. Apples and pumpkin and squash. Hearty soups and casseroles. Soothing tea. Gorgeous colors. Leggings and boots. Hot coffee and lattes.

3-Ingredient Paleo “Peanut Butter” Cookies

I promised a recipe using the homemade sunflower seed butter I posted last week, and these paleo “peanut butter” cookies are it.

I’m not going to lie: I love peanut butter. I miss it (and still sometimes stuff my face with it). Almond butter seemed like a good replacement at first, but it just doesn’t have that distinctive, robust peanut taste. Enter sunflower seed butter. I knew that many families with peanut-allergic kids used sunflower seed butter, but I was skeptical that it tasted at all like peanut butter.

Then I tried it. I’m a convert.

Sure, if you performed a blind side-by-side taste test, you’d surely be able to tell the difference. But as far as all nut and seed butters go, sunflower seed butter and peanut butter are pretty damn close.
